Movies/Scenes Representing War
& Its Effects
- Saving Private Ryan
(1998)
- I used the last 7 minutes of Saving Private Ryan as a clip to speak about the lack of Glory in War and to help us move into the topic of Allegiance to God vs Allegiance to Country. The clip shows the pain of the war, and flashes back to Ryan in the present time reflecting on those who had died for him. (Pastor Michael Stadtmueller Christ the Lord Lutheran Church Elgin, IL)
- The Thin Red Line (1998)
- Life is Beautiful (1997/1998)
- The War (1994)
- Parallels the war in Vietnam with the war between children in a family.
- "War is like a big machine that no one really knows how to run and when it gets out of control it ends up destroying the things you thought you were fighting for, and a lot of other things you kinda forgot you had."
- Schindler's List (1993)
- Glory (1989)
- There is a great scene near the end of the movie, by the pond the day before the final battle. Matthew Broderick asks Denzel Washington to carry the colors in battle and Denzel Washington refuses, leading to a discussion of how dirty the entire affair is, how they are all covered up in it, and how good it would feel to get clean. Themes of sin, repentance, baptism, and becoming clean. (Doug Lowe)
- Mrs. Miniver (1960 TV)
- Dialogue excerpts on war's effects at Reel Classics.
