- Themes
- Incarnation
- "Sister Mary Clarence leads them
in their first song in worship. The Reverend Mother chastises her
for "Boogie Woogie" in church. The priest intervenes and
commends the Reverend Mother for "her" innovative efforts
to revitalize the parish. Preaching Themes: incarnation, that Jesus
came to be with us as one of us. St. Paul "becoming all things
to all people in order that some might be saved." The challenge
of the church becoming culturally relevant in order to reach the
world, not changing the message but adapting the method."
- Prayer
- Jonah's prayer in the belly of the big fish has the
feel of a patchwork quilt prayer, made up of quotes
from various psalms. It reveals the value of living with scripture
whereby, like our learning to talk as children by listening to our
parents, learning to pray flows from listening to the words of the
Word. In the movie, "Sister Act," Whoopie Goldberg's
character, a Reno show girl in witness protection, hiding in an
inner city convent, prays out loud (for the first time?) over a meal
with a similar patchwork, those zanily more limited scripturally,
effort. The sound byte can be found at: http://members.tripod.com/~sister_act/prayer.wav.

- Sister Mary Clarence is asked to
pray at dinner and the results are very funny.
Start cue: Sister Mary Patrick raises her hand.
End cue: Nurses echo "Amen" (approx 1 min).
Alternatively use the section where nuns pray manipulative prayers
in the helicopter. (Youth
