Representing Miracles
- Signs (2002)
- "There are two types of people in the world, the distinction resting on how we interpret the incredible. One type sees only luck or coincidence. The other sees a sign or a miracle." ("'Signs': Exploring the Inexplicable," review by Cliff Vaughn at thefilmforum.com)
- ?Suppose there was no such thing as coincidence?? the ex-clergyman asks. He goes on to tell his younger brother that there are two kinds of people in this world. Some people can look upon an extraordinary, inexplicable, frightening occurrence and panic, because they only believe in chance, and thus have no one to turn to. Others can look at the same occurrence and call it a miracle-- knowing that they are not alone and whatever happens they will not have to deal with it totally on their own. (Dan Davis, First United Methodist Church, Hampshire, Illinois)
- The End of the Affair
(1999)
- Sarah clearly believed in miracles but while she could heal others she couldn't, or wouldn't save herself. I enjoyed the way the same scene was shown from the perspective of different characters, especially the scene where Maurice appears, Lazarus like, in the doorway after Sarah makes her promise to God. (Mike Clark, Hamilton, Canada.)
- Angela's Ashes
(1999)
- Frankie finds a penny, looks up at the Statue of Liberty, prays to St Francis to get out of his brother's class. Frank's composition about what it would be like if Jesus was born in Limerick convinces the school to promote him. (DVD ch 17)
- The Green Mile
(1999)
- John Coffey (J.C.) the healer.
- John Coffey brings the mouse back to life.
- Prince of Egypt (1998)
- Pulp Fiction (1994)
- Jules and Vincent, side by side, experience being shot at in a flurry of bullets and see the bullet holes on the wall behind them. Jules sees a "miracle" which causes him to try to leave his life as a hit-man. Vincent sees nothing - discounts the "miracle" - and is killed later (earlier!) in the film.
- Rudy (1993)
- Leap of Faith (1992)
- scene where boy walks up to the statue
of Jesus feet and is healed.
Start cue: Steve Martin says no more miracles today and walks out.
End cue: after sister runs up and hugs him.
Alternatively use the scene where Steve Martin admits he is a fake faith healer because he has seen the young boy?s healing - the real thing. (Youth Alpha Australia)
- scene where boy walks up to the statue
of Jesus feet and is healed.
- Grand Canyon
(1991)
- "What if these things are miracles, Mack....only we don't have any experience in miracles, and so we're slow to recognize them?"
- Ghost (1990)
- This film works well in helping others to identify with the impulse to share truth and convictions related to the supernatural. The scene were Patrick Swayze first visits Whoopie Goldberg and realizes that she can hear him, followed by the scene of him singing Henry the Eigth I Am, demonstrates that once one hears of and encounters a truth, It is difficult to deny: (Jay Slocum)
- Empire of
the Sun (1987)
- The young hero, Jim, thinks that he can raise the dead because while he was trying to rescusitate a dead woman her eyes moved. Later in the movie he thinks that he can raise everyone who has died in the war. (Michael Clark, Hamilton, Canada)
