Movies/Scenes
Representing Abraham
- John Q (2002)
- This movie depicts the plight of a father (Denzel Washington) willing to lay down his life for his son and therefore should be cross-referenced under Abraham and Issac and Cross and Resurrection in the sense of the suffering of God through the evil of Jesus death. As a social commentary, it pricks our conscience about a society with medical services for those who can afford them and death for those who cannot. As redemptive drama, it also shows the metanoia or reversal of thinking in several characters who broker the power of the HMO medical system but in the end ultimately side with the powerlessness of John Q. and his son. - Eye of God (1997)
- binding of Isaac/sacrifice of children - see especially death scenes near end of movie
- Sheriff Rogers' speech: "Faith. God tells a man to sacrifice his own son. The man has faith, and he will do it. He doesn't ask why. Maybe Abraham, as he binds his son, knows why they are there. I don't anymore." Ainsley at the end of the movie: "Children. That's all we are, Lord, if you're out there at all. Your children, boys and girls. Forgive us." (We're all Isaac - we're all Abraham)
- Behind the Lines (1997)
- Look at the last scene of the movie "Behind the Lines" where the Doctor reads a poem written by a former patient about the story of Abraham and Issac. It is on the Artisan home movie label, made in 1997, called "Behind the lines", staring some unknowns Jonathan Pryce and James Wilby. It is the story of a Doctor and his patients in a WW1 mental hospital. (submitted by Pat LeClaire)
- Field of Dreams (1989)
- Ray Kinsella and his wife give up everything in Iowa/UR to find the promise land. At the end of the movie their daughter envisions the field as a promised land for people, and as the credits roll their are headlights as numerous as the stars coming to the promise land of an Iowa baseball field.
